reds Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: from a proper producer, this can be a real sleeper among red Italian red wines. Made from the montepulciano grape, which is plump and filled with flavor, it has a punchy, dense, fruit-packed character, and it can also be a wine that is not only excellent young, but ages. While a huge export (or airplane) wine in general, producers in the northern area of Abruzzo are the ones producing the quality. A subzone designation, Colline Teramane helps identify these wines.

whites There is a lot of white produced in this area, but you are really on your own. Most of it is consumed locally, and some can be good. There is Frascati, near Rome, and Trebbiano from Abruzzo, which can be light and crisp, and which certainly has a distinct acidity.
